Malaysian Prime Minister Visits Thriving Battersea Power Station Neighbourhood

Battersea Power Station was proud to welcome YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, for a visit to the vibrant riverside neighbourhood in Central London, UK, on Thursday 16th January 2025.

The Prime Minister met with Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, Chairman of Battersea Project Holding Company Ltd, YBhg Dato’ Abdul Rahman Ahmad, President and Group CEO of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, and representatives of the Board, Datuk Choong Kai Wai, Chairman of Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) and Dato’ Seri Azmir Merican, Chairman of the Battersea Project Executive Committee for a tour of the 42-acre regeneration project which centres around the iconic Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station. The transformation of the large-scale mixed-use development has been led by a consortium of Malaysian companies comprising Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

Battersea Power Station is one of Europe’s largest regeneration projects, delivering over 4,000 new homes, 3.5 million sq ft of mixed commercial space, 19 acres of public realm and 20,000 jobs, with approximately half of the neighbourhood completed to date. With the shareholders’ long-term vision, strong expertise and investment, Battersea Power Station has brought tremendous value to a once neglected London district, in turn supporting the Malaysian economy, whilst putting Malaysia’s property development capabilities on an international stage within this vibrant global city.

Today, Battersea Power Station is home to more than 150 shops, cafés, restaurants and leisure experiences, over 3,000 residents, more than 6,600 workers, and is connected to the rest of Central London via a new Zone 1 Underground station. Named by National Geographic as one of the 20 “Best Cultural Spots” in the world in 2024, Battersea Power Station has welcomed over 26 million visitors since opening to the public in October 2022, and has quickly become an established retail, leisure, office and residential destination within Central London.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, YB Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Deputy Secretary General, YBhg. Dato’ Bala Chandran Tharman. The Malaysian High Commissioner, H.E. Dato’ Zakri Jaafar, also attended the Prime Minister on the visit.

H.E. Dato’ Zakri Jaafar, Malaysian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, remarked:

“The redevelopment of Battersea Power Station by the Malaysian consortium exemplifies Malaysia’s expertise and vision, breathing new life into a historic landmark while delivering significant benefits to local communities and the United Kingdom. This achievement highlights Malaysia’s capability to execute transformative projects and further reinforces the enduring trade and investment partnership between our two nations.”

Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, Chairman of Battersea Project Holding Company, said:

“On behalf of the team at Battersea Power Station, it was an honour to welcome the Prime Minister of Malaysia to this thriving new district to showcase how this once derelict London landmark has been transformed into a new, exciting destination which is popular with a wide-ranging demographic, all powered by Malaysian expertise and investment.

“What has been created is a bustling community of shops, restaurants, leisure and entertainment activities, homes, offices and green spaces, with lots more still to come, which will continue to drive growth and value. We were therefore very proud to have been able to share this great example of what can be successfully achieved by Malaysia on an international scale with the Prime Minister.”

2025 is set to be an exciting year for Battersea Power Station. New occupants will move into 50 Electric Boulevard, the development’s new 200,000 sq ft state-of-the-art office space, including global architecture studio Foster + Partners, who have leased 48,000 sq ft to support its international growth. The neighbourhood’s popular Light Festival is set to return from 23rd January – 23rd February 2025, kickstarting the exciting annual programme of events, with other highlights including celebrASIA, which will return for a second year in September 2025 celebrating Southeast Asian heritage and culture.

Further British and international brands will also open within the Power Station and on Electric Boulevard, the neighbourhood’s pedestrianised high street, including Lindex children’s clothing, On Running, R.W. Wolf barbers, Diptique, Heartcore pilates, Watch House coffee shop and Bizzy Me children’s activity centre.

There is lots more to come, with approximately half of the 42-acre, mixed-use project still to be developed, comprising a mix of high quality residential, commercial, retail and leisure spaces. Outline planning permission has been granted for the future phases, which will complete the ambitious vision for Battersea Power Station and bring greater economic prosperity to both the UK and Malaysia.

Battersea Power Station has been transformed by its shareholders which have come together to form the Battersea Project Holding Company, comprising Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). In 2019, leading fund management companies Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and EPF became the long-term commercial asset holders securing the future of the landmark for many generations to come.
