World Down Syndrome Day at Battersea Power Station: Building a More Inclusive Place for Everyone

On 21st March, we marked World Down Syndrome Day — a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness of Down syndrome and celebrating the valuable contributions of people with Down syndrome in our communities.

At Battersea Power Station, accessibility and inclusion are central to how we welcome our guests. This year, we are proud to have taken meaningful steps to ensure our destination and our teams are more inclusive for people with Down syndrome and their families.

To support this important day, we partnered with Down Syndrome UK, who worked closely with Ethos Farm — our Guest Experience service provider — to develop a bespoke Down Syndrome Awareness e-learning course. This course has been designed to raise awareness, build understanding, and equip our teams with the knowledge and confidence to better support our guests.

Rock Your Socks: Fundraising for Awareness

On Friday 20th March, our teams across the estate took part in the “Rock Your Socks” initiative. By wearing bright, mismatched socks, colleagues sparked conversations about Down syndrome, celebrated difference, and helped raise funds to support the work of Down Syndrome UK.

While the day itself has passed, donations are still welcome via our JustGiving page, helping us continue supporting this important cause.

Making Battersea Power Station More Inclusive

World Down Syndrome Day is not just about awareness — it’s about action.

As part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility, we are introducing several practical steps to make our spaces more welcoming for people with Down syndrome and their families. These include:

  • Training Front of House teams in basic Makaton and British Sign Language to support clearer communication
  • Identifying and promoting quiet spaces across the estate
  • Equipping teams with practical guidance on inclusive and supportive engagement

Combined with our new e-learning programme, these initiatives will ensure our teams are better prepared to deliver patient, respectful, and inclusive experiences for every guest.

A heartfelt thank you to the team at Down Syndrome UK, to Ethos Farm, and a special mention to CEO and Founder Nicola Enoch for their collaboration and support in making this initiative possible.
