This Disability Pride Month, we’re proud to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and continue our commitment to making Battersea Power Station a welcoming destination for everyone.
Creating an accessible and inclusive environment is an ongoing journey, and Disability Pride Month provides an important opportunity to reflect on the actions we’re taking to improve the experience of our guests and support our teams with the knowledge and confidence they need.
As part of our Disability Pride Month activities, we were delighted to welcome the Thomas Pocklington Trust, in partnership with the Sight Loss Council, to deliver two Visual Awareness and Sighted Guide Training sessions for a number of customer-facing teams at Battersea Power Station.
The interactive sessions provided practical guidance on how to confidently support visitors with sight loss, covering topics such as understanding different types of visual impairment, effective communication, and sighted guiding techniques.
The training was attended by colleagues across our Experience teams, including Guest Services, Security, Car Park, Concierge and Reception, as well as team members from IMG, who are delivering a major new event, Electric Summer, in Power Station Park from 29th July – 31st August. Bringing together teams from across the estate helps ensure that every guest receives a consistent, welcoming and supportive experience throughout their visit.
Alongside the in-person training, Ethos Farm, our service provider for the Experience Team, also launched a new Deaf Awareness e-learning course for our customer-facing teams.
The course introduces colleagues to Deaf awareness, inclusive communication and practical ways to support Deaf and hard of hearing guests. It also includes an introduction to British Sign Language (BSL), teaching basic signs that can be used during everyday customer service interactions to help make visitors feel more welcome and supported.
By investing in ongoing learning opportunities, we’re helping our teams develop the skills and confidence to provide exceptional service to all our guests. Alongside this training, our Guest Services desks are equipped with CONVO, a 24/7 on-demand British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting service. This enables Deaf guests to connect with a qualified BSL interpreter in real time, helping us provide clear, accessible communication and assistance whenever it’s needed.
“Our Experience teams are often the first people our guests meet, so it’s vital they have the confidence, knowledge and tools to support everyone with empathy and understanding. From specialist training to new accessibility initiatives, we’re investing in our people so that every guest feels valued from the moment they arrive.”
– JP Hewlett, Senior Guest Services Operations Manager, Battersea Power Station
