Building a Community

At Battersea Power Station, we are creating a destination and building a community.

Our Community Team have worked in the local area for many years to build relationships with well over 100 different organisations and charities. Below is a spotlight on a few of our neighbours.

Caius House

Caius House
Their Mission
To be the keystone of inspiration for young people. To ensure every child is included, valued and given the opportunity to fulfil their potential while building the existing Caius House into a centre of excellence that acts as a new model for others.
Delrita at Caius House
I like to think of Battersea as a unique area with lots of different communities and cultures coming together. We work with young people from the age of two who come to our nursery all the way up to 21 years old. We really want to be here as a hub for the community, where young people can try new things, have new experiences and hopefully find their passion or interest in another activity.

Elays Network

Elays Network
Community is Our Main Goal. Empower, educate, enable community members tackle inequality and enhance inclusion.
Abdirahman at Elays Network
Battersea is a village in a city. At Elays we play an active role advocating and raising the voice of young people and families living in Battersea. We focus on our core areas of education and training, health and wellbeing and advice and advocacy, creating safe spaces, experiences and opportunities.
Why?
The evidence on low educational attainment amongst young people from deprived areas in inner London and the increased risk of being involved in gangs and street violence was having a degenerative impact on young peoples confidence and life chances.

Carney’s Community

Carney’s Community
Carneys aims to improve physical, mental and social wellbeing of the most vulnerable and excluded young people aged 11-30 years in and around Wandsworth, London. Our young people face the inequity of more challenging life experiences relating to finance, home life, mental and physical health, paired with less access to the systems to support their wellbeing.
George at Carney’s Community
We believe that by empowering young people through mentoring, participation, focusing on their strengths and learning from each other, we can improve not only their opportunities, but also those of their local community.
How they help
The support we offer is based on the Cycle of Change, a tool commonly used in social work. This model recognises that individuals will engage in support when they are ready, so we aim to be a long term consistent presence, building trusting relationships in preparation for when they’re ready to make a change (known as the “teachable moment” or the “contemplation stage”).

Katherine Low Settlement

Katherine Low Settlement
Katherine Low Settlement has been at the heart of Battersea since 1924. They work to reduce poverty and isolation and bring the community together, supporting local older people, along with children, young people and their families from refugee backgrounds and newly arrived adults learning English: over 500 people a week visit their centre.
Lisa at Katherine Low Settlement
Battersea is very multicultural area; we’ve got young and old – there’s a nice buzz to the area. Many of our members have been coming from childhood, myself included. My son came here as a child, he went to the nursery, and he is now 18 so I’ve been here for a little while. We help people combat isolation, build new friendships, encourage new skills and the picking up on old skills.
KLS Programmes
Elders Programme works with older people in the community to support health and wellbeing and reduce loneliness and isolation.
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is an educational and extracurricular programme for newly arrived adults looking to improve their English or learn English for the first time.
Love to Learn is an educational and wellbeing programme for 350+ children and young people from refugee backgrounds and their families and carers living in Wandsworth.
