Craft Masterclass: Sarawak Bemban Mat Weaving

Explore the ancient craft of weaving through the creation of your very own Bemban woven mat.

The beautiful and time-honoured craft of weaving has been passed down through generations. Natural fibres are transformed into meaningful, functional art. Rooted in the traditions of Borneo’s indigenous communities, weaving is about more than just technique – it’s a connection to culture, nature, and heritage.

In this beginner-friendly 1-hour workshop, you’ll explore the basics of craft weaving through the creation of your very own Bemban woven mat. Using natural materials like Rattan and Bemban, fibres traditionally used by Borneo’s native artisans, you’ll be guided by an experienced craftsperson to learn simple weaving techniques and experiment with textures and patterns.

This calming and creative session offers a therapeutic escape into the world of traditional craftsmanship. Whether you’re looking to try something new or reconnect with cultural roots, you’ll walk away with both a handmade piece and a deeper appreciation for heritage art.
