£13M Agreed for New NHS Medical Centre

Confirmation of the funding model for a new NHS medical centre at Battersea Power Station will see nearly £13m invested in the fit-out and running of vital new healthcare facilities for people living in and around Nine Elms.

The redevelopment of the Power Station is paying for the capital costs of the medical centre with the operational costs being met from developer contributions from across Nine Elms. It will be on the southern part of the Power Station site.

Following a meeting of the Nine Elms Vauxhall Strategy Board it was agreed that £13m will be allocated from a combination of Development Infrastructure Funds and Community Infrastructure Levy payments which developers have been required to make to both Wandsworth and Lambeth councils.

The new medical facility on the Battersea Power Station site will have the capacity to accommodate up to 20 rooms for consultation, examination, treatment and dental procedures. It will be located amongst 386 new affordable homes, and a range of affordable small business premises. Further new affordable homes are planned elsewhere throughout the Power Station site.

It is hoped that construction can begin as early as next year. The medical centre and affordable homes form part of the Power Station development which the shareholders have brought forward so that both can be delivered for the local community earlier than had been planned originally.

The design of the affordable homes and medical centre echo the style of London’s red brick mansion blocks already seen in Battersea’s Prince of Wales Drive. The architects are award winning firm Patel Taylor and nearly every home will be dual aspect and all with have access to private outdoor space. Nearly half are three or four bedroom family-sized homes. The homes will offer a range of discounted rent and discounted sale prices.

The arrangements for funding the running of the new medical centre were part of a package of funds agreed to upgrade NHS medical facilities in both Wandsworth and Lambeth where the regeneration of former industrial land in Nine Elms is already paying for 3000 affordable homes, two new tube stations and two new primary schools.

Rob Tincknell, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company, said:

“The new medical centre we are creating is an essential part of the social infrastructure being built as a result of the regeneration taking place at Battersea Power Station, and with the tube line already underway we hope to start on the medical centre and affordable homes in the coming year.”

Jane Ellison, MP for Battersea, said:

“This is a really important milestone in the delivery of a much-needed new NHS medical centre which will give existing and new communities access to a team of medical professionals, located in modern, new accommodation and offering a range of services.”

Cllr Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council said:

“People quite rightly want to see the wider benefits of new development being used to improve people’s quality of life and their life chances, this medical centre along with the thousands of affordable homes being built in Nine Elms show that this is exactly what is happening.
