Minister of International Trade and Industry Visits Bps

Malaysia’s Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), YB Datuk Darell Leiking, visited Battersea Power Station in Central London, UK, on Sunday 26th January to witness the significant progress that is being made on this iconic regeneration project. This was his first visit to Battersea Power Station and he was greeted by Simon Murphy, CEO, M Shahrul Azri Mamat, Chief Strategic Relations Officer, Marina Chung, Chief Design Review Officer and Mark Hutton, Head of Residential Sales and Lettings at Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC). Malaysia’s Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Mohd Suhaimi Jaafar, was also in attendance.

The Battersea Power Station development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian shareholders comprised of S P Setia, Sime Darby Property and The Employees’ Provident Fund. The commercial assets within the Power Station building are now directly owned by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and EPF following an acquisition completed last year, representing one of the largest real estate transactions in the UK. The transaction and the commitment from the consortium demonstrate continued confidence in London and the UK as an attractive place in which to invest.

Building on the goods and services procured from Malaysia to date, Battersea Power Station is targeting a further £30-£40 million (RM160.5-213.5 million) of Malaysian products, including professional services, to be procured in the next phases of the project. Battersea-based luxury tiles and timber flooring distributor, Domus Group, is a key example of UK and Malaysian trades successfully collaborating to bring high quality Malaysian-supplied tiles and timber flooring for use in the Power Station, Battersea Roof Gardens and Prospect Place buildings. The Battersea Team has been working closely with the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) to promote the Malaysian supplies at Battersea Power Station and will be visiting Malaysia in the near future to engage further with suppliers and seek to ensure the Malaysian component of the scheme continues to grow.

As well as receiving an update on the wider development, YB Datuk Darell Leiking and his team were given a tour of two dressed apartments, one inside the Power Station, and of the visible progress being made on the Frank Gehry and Fosters + Partners designed third phase. They also experienced Circus West Village, the first chapter of the regeneration project, which is now a thriving riverside destination home to over a thousand people, a wide range of independent shops, restaurants, a theatre, cinema and other leisure facilities including an indoor golf experience. Over three million people have visited Circus West Village in the past 12 months.

YB Datuk Darell Leiking, Minister of International Trade and Industry for Malaysia, said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed coming down to see Battersea Power Station in person. It is already a flourishing place, which is underpinned by heritage, people and community, that attracts millions of people from all over the world.

“The Malaysian government and MITI are committed to providing support to Malaysian traders and suppliers to enable their products and services to be exported to the UK. International projects such as Battersea Power Station demonstrate what can be achieved in terms of using the Malaysian supply chain when building great places and I have no doubt this will continue as the scheme progresses.”

Dato’ Ahmad Pardas Senin, Chairman of Battersea Project Holding Company, said:

“We were delighted that YB Datuk Darell Leiking enjoyed his trip to Battersea Power Station. We are committed to working hard to ensure Malaysian products and services are used throughout this iconic project and look forward to continuously working with MATRADE to accomplish this.

“We continue to be confident in London’s position as a global city and are incredibly proud of this ambitious long-term venture that the Malaysian consortium has undertaken.”

Simon Murphy, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC), said:

“On behalf of our shareholders, it was a great pleasure to welcome YB Datuk Darell Leiking and his party to Battersea Power Station where they saw the tremendous progress being made on transforming this unique asset into a new destination for London and the input from the Malaysian supply chain so far. The Power Station and the third phase, which includes Malaysia Square, are our current priorities as we prepare to open them both next year.

“Thanks to our shareholders’ expertise and vision as this iconic building is well on its way to being brought back to life for all to enjoy.”
