Battersea Power Station Launches Heritage App

Battersea Power Station is launching a new digital app to celebrate the history and heritage of the Grade II* listed building and its surroundings. The “”Heritage Trail”” app, which is free to download, explores the past, present and future of this iconic building as well as the wider transformation of this part of the capital into one of London’s most exciting new destinations.

Battersea Power Station, in partnership with leading digital agency Calvium, has created the app to bring to life the fascinating history surrounding this iconic building.

The app, narrated by journalist and broadcaster Jonathan Freedland, guides visitors around Circus West Village, the first element of the regeneration to complete, and provides information, facts and insights into the Power Station’s history over the years at key points around the area.

The app will be officially launched at a special event on Thursday 7 June at The Village Hall, Circus West Village, entitled “”Digital Placemaking: Shaping Places through Technology””. The team behind the app’s creation will lead a discussion exploring how technology is changing the way people explore places and the role of placemaking in the digital age. See here for more details.

In addition to the Heritage Trail, Battersea Power Station is hosting a series of events and activities in partnership with London Festival of Architecture this June. They include:

  • The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) TimeTruck: Visitors will be able to hop on board the TimeTruck where they can learn about local history and even view objects that have come straight out of the Grade II* Listed Power Station. They will also have the opportunity to “Ask an Archaeologist” about their own unique finds and discuss them with an expert. Suitable for all ages. Located at Grosvenor Arch, Circus West Village. Open from 10am-6pm from 1 – 2 June.
  • Studio Kyson’s “Treehouse”: Throughout the month of June, Circus West Village will host “Treehouse”, a free-standing structure designed by Studio Kyson. The striking geometric pavilion of smoked mirror and charred timber is a space to walk into, around or simply observe. It will offer visitors a place to decompress or re-calibrate in the heart of the busy city. Suitable for all ages throughout June. Located on the riverwalk at Circus West Village.
  • VIEW Photography Regeneration Exhibition: An exhibition of selected behind-the-scenes photographs charting the restoration of Battersea Power Station over the past four years will be on display in the Circus West Village Pop-Ups. From 5 – 17 June from 10am-7pm (weekends) and 12pm-7pm (weekdays).
  • The River That Shaped a City: SimpsonHaugh architects of Circus West Village, will lead an architectural river cruise across the heart of the capital. The cruise will culminate in a lively discussion at Circus West Village’s Village Hall, where key figures from the worlds of architecture, design and urbanism, will discuss how the river has shaped the identity of London. 29 June 5:30pm – 8:30pm.

Rob Samuel, Chief Development Officer of Battersea Power Station, said: “The Heritage Trail app is a great new way for people to explore this iconic area and brings the concept of placemaking into the digital age. We are delighted to be taking part in this year’s festival of events which, coupled with the great restaurants, cafes and bars now open promise to make Battersea Power Station a fantastic place for people to explore.”

Jo Reid, Managing Director, Calvium, said: “Digital placemaking offers people new and immersive ways to discover the world around them. About Battersea Power Station:

  • Battersea Power Station is one of central London’s largest, most visionary and eagerly anticipated new town centres in which roughly half the development will comprise shops, restaurants and office space. In addition, there will be a six-acre public park, a town square and a new tube station (scheduled to be within Zone 1).
  • The Battersea Power Station project covers 42 acres and includes 3.5m sq ft of mixed commercial space, together with 4,364 new homes.
  • The successful regeneration of Battersea Power Station will create 20,000 new jobs, inject £20bn into the UK economy and create a funding mechanism for the first major tube line extension since the Millennium. A new NHS medical facility is also being built.
  • The Battersea Power Station Foundation supports local charities and community projects. Over £3.3m has been awarded since it launched in 2016; on average, £207,000 is granted per month and the largest grant awarded was to Battersea Arts Centre for £305,000.
  • Circus West Village is the neighbourhood centre for the first part of the development. It opened to the public in Spring 2017 and since then over 700,000 people have visited to enjoy the ongoing programme of events and the new shops and restaurants.
  • Residents started to move in to Circus West early in 2017 and continue to do so. The Village Hall, a new performance space, has opened at Circus West Village and a new MBNA Thames Clippers River Bus service commenced on 1 November 2017.
  • The Battersea Academy of Skills Excellence (BASE), the development company’s bespoke jobs and training service created for those living locally, was launched in 2016.  It is focused on matching people with jobs at Battersea as well as providing training relevant to the job pipeline at the development.
  • Battersea Power Station is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors comprised of Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and the Employees’ Provident Fund. Management of the development is being undertaken by the British-based Battersea Power Station Development Company.
