BPS Receives a Visit From Heritage Minister

Simon Murphy, CEO at Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC), welcomed
Heritage Minister, Michael Ellis MP, to the Battersea Power Station site in Central London
today. The Arts, Heritage and Tourism Minister laid the 60,125th brick, assisted by one of the
bricklayers from PAYE Stoneworks and Restoration (PAYE), which has been ordered as part
of the restoration of the iconic Power Station building. In total, 1.75 million bricks have been
meticulously made by the same UK brickmakers that produced the originals used to build the
Power Station in the 30s and 50s.

Working closely with a team of specialists led by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, advised by Purcell
for the heritage aspects and PAYE, alongside Historic England and Wandsworth Borough
Council, it will take approximately two years to make sure the new bricks blend in smoothly
with the old ones. Mace is the Construction Manager on this phase of the redevelopment
project.

The Minister also got an exclusive look at Control Room A, inside the 1930s art deco Turbine
Hall, that is soon to become an immersive events space and will be a prominent heritage
feature of the building once opened.

During the visit, the importance of preserving the heritage and character of this Grade II* listed
building whilst turning it into a new destination for London that is fit for modern day purposes
was widely discussed.

Once completed, the restored Power Station building will include over 100 shops, restaurants
and cafes, 250 apartments, 540,000 sq ft of office space including Apple’s London Campus
and a variety of events spaces. When completed in late 2020, the building will become the
heart of the new town centre that is being created. It will open to the public in 2021.
Michael Ellis MP, Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, said:
“Battersea Power Station is one of the most iconic buildings on the London skyline and it is
imperative that this listed site has a sustainable future.

It was a pleasure to see the ongoing work to transform the station into a modern
development for the local community, while preserving its unique historic importance.”
Simon Murphy, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC), said:
“We were delighted to welcome the Minister for Heritage, Michael Ellis MP, to Battersea Power
Station and it was a real honour to show him the great lengths gone to restoring this iconic
landmark. Protecting and showcasing the Power Station’s heritage, and the memories of those
who worked there, is of upmost importance and a key priority for our Malaysian shareholders.
We will continue to work assiduously with all our partners to ensure this iconic building
balances heritage, craftsmanship and contemporary reinvention.”
