A Love Letter to London

Battersea Power Station is playing host to a huge ‘Chubby Heart’ balloon this Valentine’s Day as part of a surprise declaration of love to the great city of London. Anya Hindmarch’s latest campaign, a love letter to London, which saw a giant inflatable red heart fly between the iconic chimneys will also be appearing above (or within) many other famous landmarks across the capital.

Battersea Power Station is especially pleased to be celebrating Valentine’s Day and London Fashion Week as the Power Station is set to become one of the capital’s most important fashion retail destinations. In 2020 the former Turbine Halls will open to the public, providing the perfect place to sample the latest fashions or find a Valentine’s gift for that special someone. When the initial phases of the project are complete, Battersea Power Station will become one of the city’s major retail destinations, comparable in scope to Oxford Street.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, says:

“As London Fashion Week showcases the capital to the world, these huge heart balloons animating our great spaces and architecture will show once again that London is open to talent and creativity and gives it a warm welcome.”

Battersea Power Station, other London landowners, businesses, borough councils, hotels, the Civil Aviation Authority, the British Fashion Council and the Mayor have all come together to make the Chubby Hearts scheme – conceived by Anya Hindmarch – a success.

According to Anya Hindmarch:

“The idea for this project came to me while sitting in a packed Royal Festival Hall. I was in awe of the resilience of Londoners and its visitors.  Tying giant helium filled Chubby Hearts on to buildings all over the city is simply a ‘surprise love letter to London’ as a tribute to its strength and to celebrate our amazing creative city.”

It’s not the first time that the Power Station has hosted a spectacular balloon. Famously in 1976 the building served as the backdrop to Pink Floyd’s inflatable airborne pig, ‘Algie’, for the cover of the band’s album Animals. The pig unfortunately broke free and floated away.

Rob Tincknell, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company, said:

“Battersea Power Station is one of the most iconic buildings in the world and is a great place to launch a campaign celebrating London. The building has become synonymous with culture, having appeared in so many films and music videos over the years. It is not the first time the chimneys have played host to an inflatable, having famously had the Pink Floyd pig float above the building so it’s great to re-create this iconic moment in support of Anya Hindmarch’s campaign.”
