BATTERSEA POWER STATION CELEBRATES ART NIGHT

Art lovers will be able to enjoy London’s largest free contemporary arts festival at one of the capital’s most iconic locations, Battersea Power Station, which will host the Festival Square for this year’s Art Night from 7-8 July at Circus West Village.

The annual all-night festival is this year co-curated by the Hayward Gallery and is coming south of the river for the first time in its history. The trail will run along the South Bank from Battersea Power Station to the Southbank Centre, transforming the area with performances, installations and pop-ups for all to enjoy.

Art Night offers a glimpse of the exciting things still to come at Battersea Power Station, which will become an entirely new town centre for London comprising thousands of new homes (available to buy now), offices, shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and open public space. See below for residential sales and leasing contact details.

The festival will showcase a selection of exciting new commissions, one-off artist projects and premieres by 12 internationally renowned artists. As the home to the Festival Square, Battersea Power Station will be offering a selection of activities for all to enjoy across both Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July. The full line-up includes:

  • Mural by British artist Suzanne Treister – “Watercolours” from Treister’s “SURVIVOR” (F) project will take centre stage on the hoarding at Circus West Village as a new 80m long mural featuring images of the Power Station’s iconic chimneys comes together for the site specific commission.
  • Art Night Procession – Marinella Senatore will lead a procession featuring community groups and performers starting from Battersea Power Station and continuing east along the trail to the South Bank. Saturday 7 July 6pm – 7pm at Circus West Village, then carrying on across the South Bank.
  • Flower Workshop – Royal warrant holder, Moyses Stevens, which is opening a boutique and flower school at Circus West Village later this year, will be hosting a flower buttonhole making workshop. Saturday 7 July, every 30 minutes between 6-10pm. Located at Circus West Village.
  • Printmaking Workshop – The CoffeeWorks Project will be hosting a drop-in printmaking workshop with Portable Print Studio. Guests can create, print and take home a unique mono-screenprint inspired by the iconic Power Station. Free to attend from 6pm-11pm on Saturday 7 July at The CoffeeWorks Project, Circus West Village.
  • Lisson Gallery Club Night – The Village Hall will host a club night in collaboration with Lisson Gallery featuring a special screening of Hans Berg and Nathalie Djuberg’s Waterfall Variations and music sets by artists Hans Berg and Haroon Mirza. The Village Hall, 11pm Saturday 7 July – 4am Sunday 8 July.
  • Battersea Kiosk – Battersea Brewery will be running a pop-up bar on the riverwalk at Circus West Village from 6pm-10pm on Saturday 7 July.
  • Art Night Merchandise and Info Hub – the pop-up Art Night shop will be selling limited-edition merchandise including tote-bags designed by Halil Altindere and stickers by Jeremy Deller.

There will also be music throughout the festival, including a performance from Children Workshop, a specially created band, at 7.30pm on Saturday 7 July. They will perform songs about buildings and architecture, all written by children from Battersea and the Nine Elms area.

Many of the restaurants, cafes and bars at Circus West Village will also be getting involved, with special offers from Vagabond, Fiume, Tonkotsu, Cinnamon Kitchen and Wright Brothers and musical performances at Mother. The MBNA Thames Clippers River Bus will be running a special late service until 4am, enabling visitors to make the most of the festival.

Honor Fishburn, Senior Placemaking Manager at Battersea Power Station, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in Art Night and to be hosting The Festival Square for the night. We have a long-term ambition for Battersea Power Station to be a new cultural district for London and to be connected to The Southbank Centre through an ‘Arts Corridor’ along the river. Art Night 2018 is another opportunity to bring this ambition to life with a high quality artistic trail curated by Hayward Gallery, featuring a site-specific commission by Suzanne Treister at Battersea Power Station.”

Ksenia Zemtsova and Philippine Nguyen, Founders, Art Night, March 2018, said: “Art Night 2018 will continue to offer an artistic exploration of London, celebrating diversity, culture, heritage and architecture, through an engaging, free and multidisciplinary programme of events. We’re delighted to present the programme in South London for the first time this year and to continue to be a part of the city’s growing night-time culture.”

Circus West Village is now home to over a thousand residents and the new destination is serviced by the MBNA Thames Clippers River Bus, which puts it within 15 minutes of the West End and under 40 minutes to Canary Wharf. A new pedestrian entrance has also opened, connecting Circus West Village with the rest of Nine Elms via Battersea Park Road.
