Team Battersea is a short film based on the personal stories and experiences of six former employees at Battersea Power Station and features never before seen footage of life at the iconic London landmark when it was operational. Created by Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) and local production company, Chocolate Films, the short film is the result of the Team Battersea Alumni Project, which launched in January 2019. The aim of the initiative was to locate former employees and capture their stories, memories and experiences of working at Battersea Power Station, which supplied a fifth of the capital’s electricity before it was decommissioned in 1983.

Ninety years after construction of Battersea Power Station began and the nostalgia and passion for the building felt by those who used to work there remains strong with over 100 people, including former engineers, secretaries, apprentices, mechanics and their family members coming forward to be a part of the Team Battersea Alumni Project.

Jim Barnes, former Assistant Shift Charge Engineer (1967 – 1969) at the Power Station, said: “Working at Battersea Power Station has always given me a special feeling, particularly in the days when it was at full load, because everyone has heard of it and they immediately related to you. Returning to the station, my first impressions were how magnificent it looks, particularly the chimneys, which really stand out now. It used to be called ‘The Cathedral of Power’ and it has retained that status.”

The Team Battersea Alumni short film is now available to watch on the link here and in the Heritage Exhibition under Grosvenor Arch – free to access and open daily. BPSDC are still keen to hear from former workers so if you or someone you know have a memory of the Power Station please email alumni@bpsdc.co.uk,tweet or share a photo on Facebook or Instagram with #TeamBattersea.
