Wandsworth Council Leader Visits Site at BPS

The construction of 386 affordable homes in connection with the Battersea Power Station development is well underway with first residents set to move in from 2022

Part of the ‘15 minute live, work and play neighbourhood’ at Battersea Power Station, the scheme will be known as ‘New Mansion Square’ 

The affordable homes will also celebrate the long history of Battersea and its people.

Peabody and Battersea Power Station (BPS) invited Wandsworth Council Leader, Cllr Ravi Govindia CBE, and Cllr Jonathan Cook, Cabinet Member for Housing, to see the strong progress being made on 386 affordable homes as part of the Battersea Power Station masterplan and to meet with a local apprentice and construction worker currently working on site this week.

Designed by architects Patel Taylor and being built by Ardmore, the affordable homes consist of seven buildings of up to 18-storeys in height, arranged around a garden square, which echo the style of London’s grand redbrick mansion blocks. This part of the development includes a new public green space, children’s play area, an NHS medical centre and workspaces for start-up businesses and local entrepreneurs.

The new one to four-bedroom, dual aspect homes will be a mixture of London Affordable Rent and shared ownership, all with private outdoor space – balconies, terraces, access to private residents’ gardens. They are located within easy reach of the recently opened Zone 1 Northern Line Battersea Power Station tube station, which brings Battersea within 15 minutes of the West End and the City.

Peabody have announced that the affordable homes scheme will be known as New Mansion Square, paying homage to the traditional mansion blocks found in the local area delivering high quality, stunning homes.

The new buildings being built in New Mansion Square will also celebrate the long history of Battersea and its people. Three of them, Tweed, Arden and Foots Row Mansions have been named after lost streets first built in the 1870s as Battersea underwent a period of rapid industrial growth. Numerous factories and mass infrastructure projects including railways and later the development of Battersea Power Station itself, changed the landscape of the local area. The forgotten spaces and homes made for, and by generations of, local workers and tradespersons will be remembered in the new site.

Progress on the construction of these homes is well underway with the interiors being fitted out and the distinctive brick finish starting to emerge on the most advanced buildings. The first tranche of homes will be ready for residents to start moving in from 2022, the same year that the Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station will open its doors to the public

New Mansion Square is part of the fourth phase in the Battersea Power Station masterplan, which is creating an exciting new ‘15-minute’ live, work and play neighbourhood, which will act as a town centre for the immediate and wider local communities, a new business quarter for the capital and an experiential destination for Londoners, domestic and international visitors.

Opening next year, the Power Station will be home to 254 residential apartments, over 100 retail shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as unique event spaces including the Chimney Lift Experience. The opening will coincide with the launch of this exciting riverside neighbourhood’s new high street, Electric Boulevard, which will offer a mix of office space, shops, bars and restaurants, a 164-room hotel, a park and a community centre.

Circus West Village, the first chapter in the regeneration of Battersea Power Station, is already home to 1,500 residents and more than 20 bars, restaurants, cafés, fitness and leisure offerings including Gordon Ramsay’s Street Pizza, The Turbine Theatre, Black Sheep Coffee, Boom Cycle and Archlight Cinema. The thriving riverside neighbourhood usually welcomes over three million people on average each year thanks to its annual events programme.

The Battersea Power Station development is expected to draw Londoners, international visitors and workers from across the capital boosting the local economy and creating over 17,000 new jobs.
